AIMS OF THE PROJECT: To ensure that all the necessary measures are taken to ensure the effective conservation of the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae and its habitat.

It is understood by effective conservation, in the short term, to at least maintain both the population of Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae and its distribution in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and to improve them and in the middle and long term.

Related to reducing loss of habitat

Ensuring the conservation of a critical site for the species by purchasing the land (Cercado del Jarde farm).

Identifying and designing SPAs in the future all the areas important to the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae (70% of the population inside SPAs).

Possibly designing Areas of Ecological Sensitivity those inhabited by the species.

Drafting a Recovery Plan for the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae and guaranteeing approval of it by the Canary Islands Government. In this way, the conservation needs of the Houbara Bustard could be formally included in the different development plans (tourism, infrastructures.) of the Canary Islands.

To avoid modifying and/or altering its habitat

Removing and/or reducing the circulation of vehicles crosscountry and along paths in important areas for the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae.

Removing and/or reducing the circulation of people in areas important for the species.

Reducing disturbance caused by hunting and by the illegal hunting of these specimens.

Carrying out a social and economic evaluation of the different traditional methods of farming in areas inhabited by the species.

Aimed at avoiding deaths caused by powerlines

Identifying the spots with highest occurrence of deaths of this species in Fuerteventura.

Checking the permanence of already known high mortality spots in Lanzarote.

Proposing correcting measures in both of the above said cases.

Avoiding the tending of powerlines in areas important for the species.

To sideline the lack of information on the biology of the species and the management of its habitat

Carrying out research on the composition and seasonal variation of the ornithological community in areas important for the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae

Establishing relations between the aboundance of birds and environmental variables (vegetation, aboundance of prey.)

Studying relations between the aboundance of the species and of potential predators, herbivores (rabbits, goats.)

Carrying out research on the size of the population of the Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae , its distribution and trends via global censuses in the whole of their geographical distribution

Carrying out research on the distribution of the different reproductive foci and quantifying them in the main sites inhabited by the species

Obtaining information on its reproductive trends, particularly on chick productivity and their survival rate

To guarantee that the local and foreign population gets to know the conservation problems of this species and its habitat

Informing and raising awareness in most of the local and touristic population as regards the need to cooperate for the conservation of the species and its habitat

Editing educational material

Disseminating partial and final results of this project

Fostering participation and interest in the project among the sectors directly involved in the conservation of the species and its habitat

Exchange of experiences and know how with the sectors directly involved in the conservation of the species and its habitat

To control illegal hunting

Designing a management plan for the farm

Reducing disturbance caused by hunting and illegal hunting

Informing and raising awareness in most of the local and touristic population as regards the need to cooperate for the conservation of the species and its habitat

Reducing disturbance caused by the circulation of people and vehicles through areas that are a priority for the species

Disseminating information on the project and ensuring cooperation by all the sectors involved

Fostering participation and interest in the project by all the sectors directly involved in the conservation of the species
