SCI in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura Islands

Sites of Community Importance:

The Macaronesic List was officially approved by decision of European Comision, on the 28th December 2001, and it was published in the Official Diary of the European Communities on the 9th January 2002. The definitive macaronesic list comprises 174 sites , with a total extension of 457.263 hectares, which amounts to a 38,3% of the territory of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. Out of the total number of natural habitats mentioned in the Habitat Directive, 23 are located in the Canary Islands. Some of these are considered a priority and are exclusive to the area. Among those the macaronesic heather fields, macaronesic Laurisilva or Phoenix Palm groves can be noted.

Out of the 13 designated sites in Fuerteventura Island, 10 are terrestrial SCI and only two of them host Houbara populations of significance. 11 sites have been designated in Lanzarote Island, 7 of which are terrestrial. The species is present in just one of them.
