The Houbara Bustard whose Canary Islands endemic subspecies is in danger of extinction, will benefit in the next four years of a conservation project developed by SEO/Birdlife thanks to funding granted by LIFE Programme of the European Union. Actions will take place in SPA in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Graciosa, the islands where the species is distributed currently.

The main objective of the project is to implement necessary measures for the conservation of the Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae) and its habitat. The total investment amounts to 1.558.321 euros, 75% of which (i.e. 1.168.741 euros) come from LIFE Programme while the rest comes from SEO/Birdlife, Lanzarote Council, Fuerteventura Council, Territorial Planning and Environment Chancellery of the Canary Islands Government and the RSPB (Birdlife in the UK).

The priority action focus of the project is included in this call in a recently designated SPA in one of the best breeding areas for the Houbara Bustard within its geographical distribution. Besides, the project intends to act on the rest of the important areas for the Houbara Bustard (8 areas). Most of them have already been designated SPA (6 of the spaces: 5 in Fuerteventura and 1 in Lanzarote) and the remaining 2 are included in the new SPA proposal of the Canary Islands Government.
