IBA in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura Islands

The conservation programme of Important Areas for Birds (IBA), comprises 15 sites in Fuerteventura and 9 in Lanzarote. Moreover, BirdLife regards the Canarian archipelago as an EBA (Endemic Birds Area) hence its conservation is a priority at a global level.

Why an inventary of Important Areas for Birds?

The disappearance of species and sites is a proven fact in Spain. It started at the beginning of the XX century and the process has accelerated over the last few decades. The conservation programme of Important Bird Areas (IBA) is a contribution to the setting up of conservation strategies, by using the birds as indicators for the areas with a larger natural richness. So, the scarce available resources for conservation can be aimed at areas deemed a priority.

How are Important Bird Areas identified?

After a wide campaign of currrent data collection, all those zones that fulfill any of the scientific criteria established by BirdLife are considered IBAs. These criteria are based on population size , diversity and international endangered status of the birds.
