The Houbara Bustard: biology and echology
Habitat of Houbara bustard (Alares). Photo: J. González

A typical inhabitant of steppic environments of the islands, it occupies sandy plains or jables and flat and rocky grounds. Also, and particularly in bad times, it is seen in marginal environments like the verges of lava fields, arable land, etc. It has been observed that, in winter, it selects areas with a high percentage of covering by grassy and higher vegetation, which could be due to the need to go unnoticed and to the availability of food. We have no information on the breeding success rate but cases of predation by crows have been observed and different potential predators, both natural and introduced, have been pointed out.
